The heart bungee is a physical manifestation of tightness in the chest - of my particular sensation of anxiety as it grows inside of me. The vibration inside my heart feels like someone is plucking a stretched out bungee cord and it’s vibrating inside of me - while taking the flesh of my heart and twisting it into something unrecognizable. This work is a small yet significant one which has led me down an interesting path of exploring somatic experiencing within my art-making in clay.

Through a process of accumulation within a certain container, these forms emerged as an attempt to display the baggage gained over time when we let our emotions set up inside and not process them through and let them go. The process was simply throwing pieces of clay clawed out of the bag into a mold that resembled half an egg shell, representing the idea that we may be given a basic mold or shell or body in this life, but how much we end up carrying within that form will determine how heavy we feel. The largest piece is mostly solid and weighs over 5lb - having accumulated its solidity through this repetitive process of addition A gradient of baggage starts to appear. Some hold more, carry more, bear more.

A Hand to Hold

This work is about grief. It’s losing a connection to someone who made you feel less alone - and the sensation of that connection slipping through one’s fingers. One piece is the imprint of the back of my hand as it cups to hold water or something impermanent from slipping through - the other an imprint of the open palm, fingers spaced, allowing to flow what needs to move on. The capture two sides of the same coin - two different experiences in the same human while traversing loss.
